Take a Hike to Move Your Workout Outside

Every once in a while I find myself in a bit of an exercise rut. You know the feeling when you start getting a little bored with your workout, even if you try to switch up the routine. So how do you get out of this rut? For me, a change of scenery does the trick.

With the cool, crisp weather of fall, it is an excellent time to get outside to break a sweat before it gets too cold. I like to hit the trails and take a hike. Hiking is a great workout, and it is hard to replicate at the gym. The changing and uneven terrain help to work your muscles differently than your gym equipment can.

You can modify your hike to fit your fitness level. Start at a slow pace and stick to easier trails (if you have a variety to choose from) for beginners. If you prefer a more intense workout, look for tougher trails (rougher trails, steeper inclines) and increase your speed to make your body work harder.

No matter what your fitness level is, listen to your body. Drink water, stretch and take breaks as necessary. If you are planning a day trip or a longer hike, it is also a good idea to bring a healthy snack to keep you going. When you get home, and your gym bag and gear is all stinky, toss it in your StinkBOSS to get it smelling fresh again!
